The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) is a Deemed University of national stature in the field of social sciences. It has pioneered social work education in India and offers post graduate degree programs in cutting edge areas. In recognition of its social contribution and academic excellence, TISS has been accredited with an A grade (with a CGPA of 3.88 points on a four point scale) by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in December 2009. TISS is located at the top of all universities and colleges accredited by NAAC in the country. The Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India has recommended TISS to be declared as an institution of national importance. TISS faculty have played a leadership role in developing family support services, providing training in family and marriage counseling in India and conducting research in family studies.

The Department of Child, Youth and Family Studies (CYAF)a unit within UNL, is committed to enhancing the well-being of children, youth, and adults around the world by strengthening the relationships between them and the environments in which they live and learn. CYAF faculty emphasizes through their teaching, outreach and research maximizing local impact with a global scope. The Department has both undergraduate and graduate programs (at both the masters degree and doctoral degree levels). CYAF faculty is a leader in the USA and around the world in family strengths research and programming. They are also leaders and innovators in distance and on-line education.

These programs are offered through campuses at Newcastle, the Central Coast, and Port Macquarie and in partnership with international educational institutions. The School of Health Sciences excels in the teaching and learning of allied health professionals, and offers study with a strong clinical focus in the nine health professions represented within the School.Working together to educate future health care workers in a multi-professional health care environment, the School combines ground-breaking research with strong links to the professions through clinical placements. The Family Action Centre (FAC) is a multidisciplinary Centre with the vision of a truly civil society and a belief that family wellbeing is the cornerstone of healthy communities. In addition to teaching, the FAC receives funds from departments of the NSW State Government and the Commonwealth Government, from philanthropic organisations, and from corporate and private sponsorship. The Centre exists to strengthen families and communities by developing and implementing programs, undertaking research and training, and creating models of practice that promote sustainability, social justice and community leadership. The Family Action Centre began in 1986 with one project, which addressed the needs of caravan park families. The Caravan Project (now known as The Hunter Outreach Project) still operates, while around it the Centre has grown into a training and research centre within the University of Newcastle.
